EXPLORATION

Our Community Champion themes are revisited each year to ensure children leave HPAHP with a clear understanding of these topics and a commitment to being champions of these areas themselves in their future lives. We feel passionate that these themes should not only be taught discretely and should form a key component of our curriculum, rather than an ‘add on’ or tokenistic teaching approach.

Although a monthly theme has been chosen, this does not mean to say these topics are not covered throughout the year, rather that we believe it is important to explore the theme in greater detail discreetly.

Each month follows are shared theme which includes key advocates, a school song, and some exciting home learning projects. The pinnacle of each month is a whole school activity or event.

Community Champions Activities 2022/23:

September – Charity

We started the year thinking about how we can help and support others within our community. All children voted to nominate a whole school charity who we would support this academic year. The Croydon Deaf Children’s Society was our chosen charity. We will run a number of fundraising events throughout the year to support the work of this fantastic local charity. We also collected items to donate to our local foodbank – The Purley Food Hub.

October – Diversity

October was a celebration of the key ingredients that makes our school exceptional – our diverse community. We celebrated our similarities and differences through our whole school cultural day. The whole school community was invited to come into school wearing clothing that represented their culture, background, or heritage. The day concluded with a whole school food festival which took our taste buds on a culinary tour of the globe!

November – Remembrance

November was a time of remembrance – for those who have made sacrifices or discoveries that have impacted on the world we live in today. Each class created their own Poppy art which they presented in our Remembrance Day assembly.

Rem2 Rem3 Rem1

December – Human Rights

December saw us fight for what we believed in. Throughout the month we found out about people who had campaigned for things that they felt strongly about. Each class then decided about something they felt passionate about. This culminated in an end of term protest march in the playground.

January – Inclusion

Every month is inclusion month at HPAHP but in January we shone a spotlight on one the best things about our academy – everyone being involved!

February – Mental Health and Wellbeing

February was all about how we look after ourselves. We spent the month thinking about how we could ensure we had healthy minds. We held a wellbeing afternoon at the end of term where we played our favourite board games with our classmates. We saw so many different types of games – some traditional classics as well as some newer favourites.

March – Active Living

In March we got active with HPAHP’s first ever fun run. Every child in the school took part as we did laps of our playground to raise money for our chosen charity – The Croydon Deaf Children’s Society. We raised over £700 and led an active lifestyle at the same time!
